Most of us know what Roller Skating is and even if you haven’t tried it yourself, you will know at least 1 person who has. It’s one of those things, you’re not really sure when or where it came from, It has just always been there. But when and where did roller skating come from and why skating is actually good for you!
Roller Skating History
Did you know that Roller Skates were invented in London way back in 1735?
John Joseph Merlin created shoes with wheels for a grand party entrance. The entrance turned out to be unforgettable when he crashed into a large mirror!
The skates Merlin made could only go in a straight line! Thankfully the functionality of roller skates has evolved over the centuries since.
More than 100 years after Merlin’s original model was invented, James Plimpton patented roller skates with trucks and changed roller skating forever. These were not like the boots we have today though, these essentially were a board with wheels that fitted any shoe.
Roller Skating Today
Roller Skating is heavily associated with the dance era in the 1970’s but it had been steadily gaining popularity since the 1880’s.
Fast forward to 2020 and approximately 41 thousand people participated in rollerblading and roller skating in England.
During the pandemic sales of roller skates skyrocketed, so much so that Vogue reported a Worldwide Shortage of Roller Skates! In fact, more people discovered or rediscovered roller skating than in the previous 5 years.
Roller Skating now comes in many different forms such as people getting married in roller skates to Roller Derby! It can be done at any time on your own or as part of a team, you can even have hen and stage roller parties!
We all know that roller skating is brilliant for exercise but aside from that there are many other benefits of skating.
Research has shown that roller skating while listening to music can boost your mood. Some people have experienced feeling happier and more confident as a result of roller skating.
Not only is roller skating a great activity for kids, adults love it too! It is a very nostalgic feeling skating as an adult and it can transport you back to feeling like a kid again.
Roller skating is the perfect activity to have some fun with the kids, while sneaking in some exercise!
